What is Pickleball ?

Pickleball is a simple yet exciting sport that requires just a net, paddles, and a plastic ball. It’s easy to learn and enjoyable for players of all ages. While beginners can quickly pick it up, experienced players often find it to be a dynamic and fast-paced challenge.

The origins of pickleball date back to 1965, when three fathers in Washington sought a fun way to entertain their children during the summer. What started as a backyard pastime quickly evolved into a beloved sport.

Today, pickleball has grown into a globally recognized game.

To put it simply, pickleball is a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. One player serves a lightweight ball over the net, and both sides rally until a player misses the return.

The Pickleball Court

The pickleball court needs a hard surface, a net, and--preferably--lines. The court is about the size of a badminton court with a net just a little bit shorter than a standard tennis net.

Court Size Comparison

  • Pickleball: 20’ x 44’ (singles and doubles)
  • Tennis Court: 27’ x 78’ (36’ x 78’ doubles)
  • Badminton Court: 14’ x 44’ (20’ x 44’ doubles)

Many parks and recreation departments are adding pickleball lines to tennis courts or converting them solely for pickleball use. Before installing a pickleball court or converting other courts, here are some things to consider.

Fencing for Pickleball Courts

Chain-link fencing is an affordable and practical solution for enclosing pickleball courts. Since the ball measures about 3 inches in diameter, it's essential to use fencing with openings no larger than 2 inches. Backstops should be at least 10 feet high to effectively contain play, and gates should be placed at both ends of the court for convenient access.

To enhance playability, especially on windy days, it's recommended to add windbreaks, windscreens, or mesh panels. These not only reduce wind interference but also improve ball visibility by providing a consistent background.

Noise Reduction for Pickleball Courts

The repetitive sound of plastic balls hitting paddles and the energy of active players can sometimes disturb nearby residents.

To address this, installing an outdoor acoustic barrier can cut noise levels by up to 50%. These sound-dampening materials can be easily attached to chain-link fences, wooden fences, or freestanding frames to help maintain a quieter environment around the court.
